SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Syracuse’s Hofmann Sausage Company officially has a new owner based over 1000 miles from Central New York.

The Miami Beef Company (“Miami Beef”) has officially acquired the 145-year-old Syracuse company Hofmann Sausage Company (“Hofmann”).

In a statement sent out on Tuesday, Feb. 13, Miami Beef announced they purchased Hofmann from a high-profile ownership group led by the Oneida Indian Nation, adding Hofmann hot dogs and sausages to their hamburger offerings, giving customers the “full grilling experience.”

“We are thrilled to welcome Hofmann Sausage to the Miami Beef family. Hofmann has a meaningful heritage and deep connection to its loyal customers, employees, and community, which we plan to continue serving through investment in its facilities in Syracuse. We are excited to add hot dogs and sausages to our high-quality hamburger offerings to give our customers the full grilling experience. Our plan is to turbo-charge the growth of Hofmann’s footprint throughout the country and continue to look for complementary brands to acquire,” added Robert Young, CEO of Miami Beef.

Hofmann is the leading sausage and hot dog brand in the CNY area, and being around since 1879, the company has history and roots here in Central New York.

Miami Beef stated they have no plans to relocate Hofmann’s, and all of Hofmann’s employees will be retained. The recipes for Hofmann’s beef and pork franks, Smoked Sausage, Bratwursts, Beef Jerky and condiments will all stay the same as well.

In a statement from the Oneida Indian Nation, the Hofmann company was in a tough economic position when the Nation invested in them, and they have ensured the brand stays in Central New York.

“When the Oneida Indian Nation invested in Hofmann, the company was in a tough economic position. The Nation’s investment ensured that Hofmann stayed in Central New York and continued to successfully expand its brand. We are proud of the work we did to put Hofmann in a position to be acquired by Miami Beef and grow its footprint across the country. We are also very proud of the fact that as part of our sale agreement with Miami Beef, they extended their lease in Syracuse and their collective bargaining agreement with Hofmann employees which keeps Hofmann in Central New York,” said Joel Barkin, vice president of communications for the Oneida Indian Nation.

Before Miami Beef acquired Hofmann’s, the company was bought by Dallas-based Zaccanelli Food Group in 2012. According to an article from 2012, they received the majority of funding through several Central New York investors including Oneida Indian Nation Enterprises, former Syracuse Police Chief and two-time Syracuse University All-American basketball player Dennis DuVal, Syracuse University Head Basketball Coach Jim Boeheim, Dallas Cowboys quarterback and businessman Roger Staubach, and several high-profile restaurateurs and sports figures.

According to Young, Miami Beef started in 1972 in Florida and has been “An industry leader in providing quality fresh and frozen meat products to retail and foodservice customers nationwide.”

Miami Beef brands, including Miami Beef, Free Graze, Florida Raised, Sizzle King, Young Ridge, Brooklyn Burger, Devault Foods and Hofmann Sausage are produced out of their South Florida and now Central New York-based facilities.
